African Union has welcomed the resignation of Former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe describing his decision as a show of Statesmanship.
The Union notes that the decision will also cement his political legacy as a “fearless, pan-Africanist, liberation fighter & father of the independent Zimbabwean nation”
Robert Mugabe announced his decision to step down as president on Tuesday 21st November 2017 after days of uncertainty over his future as President.
Last week Wednesday, the military took control of the headquarters of the state broadcaster ZBC and blocked access to government offices but denied it was part of a coup against Mugabe's government.
It is believed that Former President Mugabe’s decision to sack his then Vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, paving way for his wife, Grace Mugabe to succeed him sparked the crisis which ended his long tenure as President.
Robert Mugabe had earlier insisted he will lead the ruling party, ZANU-PF, in their congress slated for December even though the party had at the time stripped him of his post as leader.
